I wanted to discuss this for a long time.. but only now I remembered to open a thread for this. Something about Nelly Furtado that keeps annoying me...

Back in 2001, I'm Like a Bird was a huge hit here as well as Turn off The Light. Both songs were highly played on the major radio stations for months (TOTL is actually still being played once in a while). Then, on 2004, Try was choosed as the theme for a romantic couple of a sucessful soap opera and it was someking of a cult hit here. Now, with Loose, Promiscuous might have been one of the biggest hits on the past 5 years here, it was everywhere for more than a year. Say it Right and Give it to Me were also huge.

The problem is: A lot of people, and when I say this I really mean it... a lot of people doesn't know who the hell Nelly Furtado is. They know her songs, they like her songs, but they just doesn't know who sings it and most of them doesn't even know that the person who sings Say it Right is the same one singing Promiscuous or I'm Like a Bird.

For example, even if she had two huge hits from Loose, the cd itself never achieved the Top 40 here, because the name Nelly Furtado isn't well known to sell cds.

I don't know if its because the name 'Nelly Furtado' doesn't appear much on the media (gossip magazines, scandals, controversial interviews, etc). Or if its because she keeps changing her vocals and styles and because of that most of people doesn't relate her songs... I don't know. Does it happen in your country too or is it just here in Brazil?

It happens in Mexico too once i told my friends about nelly and one told me "oh yeah the one of the mud video?" haha

With loose she is more emmm "famous" but still she doesn't do a lot of dirty things like the blonde bimbos of hollywood xD AND THANK GOD SHE ISN'T LIKE THAT

Well here in Switzerland it isn't like this.. of course they know who nelly furtado is

i mean a lot know that nelly sings for example força, or i'm like a bird or Try..
then when she came with loose my friends said "OMG! This is the girl from I'm Like A Bird, she looks hot"

but well i think this problem is that the people mostly hear radio and don't really watch the music videos.. so they know the songs but not the person..

here in Denmark its not like that, but people don't like nelly so much here ;/

say it right & agt was HUGE here. maneater did fine 2.

I hope she'll have even less "tabloid time" in the future. The whole Loose media craze was very tasteless in my opinion.

This has happened to me too. I had a friend from Colombia staying at my house for a couple of months last year, and she, poor thing, had a healthy doze of Furtado while she was here, as you can imagine... I thought she would end up hating all things Furtado after living with me, but turns out she didn't. So I converted one person to Nellyism

She told me that she knew and loved Powerless but she had no idea it was Nelly Furtado who sang it. She knew the Whoa, Nelly! songs belonged to her, but had no idea that the Folklore and Loose songs were also Nelly Furtado songs.

She was very impressed about the change of gears Nelly took for her second album and even chose Folklore as our background music during several car trips. When she left I included the Loose songs in her iTunes library, but I haven't asked what she thought of those...

The most of us knows her ... some adults no but all the teenachers knows her.. and she is very populair here holland is not a big country but the last concert were sold out in less then 2 weeks...

Here in Portugal everybody knows Nelly mainly after Euro 2004 - Força phenomenon.

And portuguese people are proud of Nelly cuz she is portuguese (of course Canadian too!).
