I know it sounds dumb.....but i find it hard to believe that her actual given name is nelly. think about it: shes 'fresh off the boat' right? shouldnt she have a really authentic portuguese sounding name? like maria or filomena or manuella (btw my cousins name is manuella and weve called her nelly as a nickname for years)! Also her siblings names are mike and lisa.........so i dunno.........what do u guys think?

Yup im pretty sure its her real name
 But yeh i can understand you saying its not very portuguese like, but who knows it could be portuguese, i have never looked into it origins. Maybe someone can find out?

Yeh, Nelly is her real name. fo sho!
She was named after a Russian ballerina with obviously the same name. I dunno why though. Her bro and sis have Englishy names too but then again, we?d just have to ask Nelly?s parents. Still, Nelly?s a cool name!

I don't know about other places in the world, but at least in Canada (where I am from) and probably the U.S. too, because they're both places where a lot of people emigrate to, it's fairly common for immigrants to name their kids with English names when they start having children.
I think this especially applies to immigrants who have lived in North America for a while before having children here, because they've been more immersed in the culture here and their kids were born here, so may as well give them an English name cause they're common here. My parents are immigrants and I was born here and I have an English name, and a lot of people I know have immigrant parents and they were named English names too. Anyway, that's just my personal experience and possible explanation

Yes, her real name is Nelly Kim Furtado... the second surname anybody know?? Maybe Nato?? I think that I read this surname but I'm not sure, hehe
