" border='0'>by: christina radish info@shemag.com Boasting a hybrid sound uniquely her own, undeniably talented singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado honed her craft while growing up in remote Victoria, British Columbia. With the success of her highly acclaimed debut album Whoa Nelly!, the 25-year-old daughter of working-class Portuguese parents has re-emerged with a new album, Folklore, and a new outlook on life. Since having her daughter Mavis, now three months old, Furtado has learned the importance of balancing the demands of her career with the demands of motherhood. Taking some time out from her hectic promotional schedule, Furtado spoke with She magazine about her latest release, her upcoming tour and why she thinks she's a good role model for women. Christina Radish: IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU FEEL YOU?VE GROWN, IN THE TIME PERIOD BETWEEN YOUR DEBUT RECORD AND THIS ALBUM? Nelly Furtado: I think I've grown a lot, emotionally. The music business makes you grow up really quickly and makes you mature at a rapid pace, just the pressure of having to perform, regardless of illness or injury or emotional madness?you've still got to get up and perform. It puts you under a lot of stress that way and I think it makes you grow. Also, recently, I've had a bunch of crazy changes in my life, having become a mother. All those things have made me feel a lot more emotionally sensitive, but in a good way, where I feel like I can put it towards my writing. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE WRITING AND RECORDING OF THIS ALBUM DIFFERENTLY THAN THE LAST ONE? Basically, I was a lot more carefree. I didn't come in with all these songs pre-written. On the first album, a lot of those songs were already pre-written, totally on guitar. I had done everything before, and then we would go in and produce them. On this album, I really just had a couple of strong ideas and I just kind of went in and said, ?Okay, let's make a record.? I just got together with Track & Field, the same guys who worked on my first album, and a lot of the songs came together very quickly?in about 10 minutes?and then we would just spend the rest of the time producing them and getting the music the way we wanted it to sound. I think I just opened up and let go a little. On my first album, I feel like my guitar playing was making me hit a brick wall with my songwriting. I wasn't becoming much better of a guitar player, so my songs weren't getting any better. So, I just had to rely on other instrumentalists to flush out better melodies. Other people played guitar chords and bass chords, which helped my voice to go in a better direction. ?I'M REALLY ALL FOR GAY MARRIAGE AND ADOPTION. I?M ACTUALLY PROUD TO BE CANADIAN BECAUSE I LOVE THAT WE?RE SO ADVANCED IN OUR GAY RIGHTS...? HOW LONG DID THE ENTIRE PROCESS TAKE FOR YOU THIS TIME? Well, two of the songs on the album were written before. The main chunk of the album was done between April and September of this year. But, within that time, there were a lot of breaks, so it was really only 12 weeks, to get it written, produced, recorded and mixed. I worked with Track & Field on my first record, and we even recorded my demo tapes together, so we really have nothing to prove to one another. We're friends. We laugh a lot in the studio, and it just really flows. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LIKE SO MUCH ABOUT WORKING WITH THEM? HAD YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WORKING WITH OTHER PRODUCERS AT ALL? I had, actually. And, I had worked with a couple other writers and instrumentalists. Track & Field are the only ones who are as ambitious. For one song, we went into this massive church with this huge pipe organ and we brought all these instruments into the church and just set up our studio in this little room, and we just did it in there. We do it for the love of music. The process has to be fun for us. If it's not fun, then there's no point in doing it. I realise that it's with them that I really feel like I am having a good time. We come from such different backgrounds, musically, that it just kind of works. It's a real democracy. The three of us really complement each other, on a production level. YOU RECEIVED SO MUCH ACCLAIM FOR YOUR DEBUT ALBUM. DID YOU FEEL ANY PRESSURE TO LIVE UP TO THAT? AND, HOW DO YOU TRY TO AVOID THOSE FEELINGS WHEN YOU?RE WRITING? I did feel pressure. I think, when you write a song like ?I'm Like A Bird,? that becomes this huge crossover, internationally crazy song, it's impossible to not feel pressure. It's kind of funny that way. But then, you've just got to throw all of that stuff out the window. You've just got to say, ?Okay, none of that really matters.? I felt a lot of pressure to be different because I think people liked my first album because it was fresh. And, once you're trying to be different, you're shooting yourself in the foot because you'll never really achieve that. I just had to go with what I felt. I had to really throw my ego out the window and go, ?Okay, I'm just going to write it. If it sucks, too bad because this is what I love right now.? READ MORE IN OUR CURRENT ISSUE Source |
