There were performances from Flypside who were joined by Nelly Furtado with an impromptu song. Other performers were Pussycat Dolls, Sean Paul and Shaggy with Ray Von.

Our choices for who should be added to spice up roster

Is it just us, or is the lineup for the Canadian Live8 concert something of a sloppy-seconds serving of classic or neo-classic rock, Central Canuck roots acts and some London and Los Angeles visitors? At least the bookers managed to find a few actual African bands to perform, including tasty rapper K’Naan and the Juno Award-winning African Guitar Summit featuring Van’s very own Alpha Yaya Diallo.

But where’s the edge? The urban, and the youth-market acts?

Sure, our lineup is waaaaay hipper than Berlin’s, but we can do better.

Apparently, three acts remain to be booked for our show in that rock ‘n’ roll centre of Barrie, Ont. After careful consideration, here’s who we’d like to see fill out the roster.

Nelly Furtado: Uh, hello. After “Forca” became an anthem of the last Euro 2004 Cup, Nelly’s hotter than ever. And she’s actually one of those rare artists with a worldwide following in two languages: English and Portuguese.

K-OS: A complete package. He brings the funk, the fun and a social conscience in line with the event’s stated goals. He’s also an artist that could appeal to the under 50s in the audience who’ll be stifling yawns through all that dull Ontario roots music and those Maritime drinking songs.

Rush: Anyone who’s travelled the globe knows that this trio is arguably our most successful cultural export. From the Kalahari to the top of Kilimanjaro and all jungles in between, there are fans who know that there is trouble in the forest. Plus, there could be a really, really long drum solo in the set for guest percussionists to jam on.

The Urban AIDS Concert took place Monday night at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Alicia Keys headlined the show that brought together some of the top names in the Canadian urban music scene, with proceeds going to the Stephen
Lewis Foundation and Keep a Child Alive.

Nelly Furtado appeared at the end of the Swollen Members set, and joined the group for ‘Breath.’ This was the first time they performed the song together in front of a live audience.

The Swollen Members then left the stage for Nelly to perform an acoustic, slower version of ‘Powerless (Say What You Want).’ Her voice was in top shape, belting out the final notes with so much power and soul – it reminded me of her performance at the VH1 Divas Live in New York. She was joined by former Philiosopher King James McCollum on guitar. She was also joined by Jully Black, a local R&B/hip hop artist.

Other performers throughout the night included Keshia Chante, k-os, and Melanie Durrant. Guest speakers included the United Nations’ special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa – Stephen Lewis, Olympic hurdler Perdita Felicien, singer Molly Johnson, Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex and Grey Cup Champions Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons and Damon Allen of the Toronto Argonauts.

Nelly has had a good track record of helping out with the AIDS crisis. In 2001, she joined Alicia Keys and a host of other top performers of Artists Against AIDS Worldwide in the remake of Marvin Gaye’s 1974 classic, ‘What’s Going On.’ In 2002, she was originally scheduled to perform at the South African AIDS benefit concert, which was unfortunately cancelled due to production complications.

Organisers of the Urban AIDS concert ran into no such problems and hope to make the show an annual event – leading up to the International AIDS Conference in August 2006 which will be hosted in Toronto.

It’s inspiring when artists with political and humanitarian awareness can take the time to help make a difference. Together, they can raise much needed awareness and political pressure for AIDS and HIV-related issues in Africa and around the world.

Juanes with Nelly have won their division of the “Premios Juventud” (“Youth Awards”)!

The first awards show on Spanish language television in which young Hispanics honour their favourite Latin stars, “Premios Juventud 2004″ gave awards in 22 innovative categories. Among the night’s biggest winners were Mexican superstar Thalia, with three statuettes (“Party Starter,” “Dream Chic,” and “My Idol Is”), and Puerto Rican heartthrob Chayanne, who also won three awards (“He’s Got Style,” “He’s So Hot,” and “Best Moves”). Other takers included Jennifer Lopez (“”She’s Totally Red Carpet” and “Paparazzi’s favourite Target”), popular Banda group Liberacion (“Catchiest Tune” and “Best Re-Mix”), famous baseball shortstop Alex Rodriguez (“Hottest Male Athlete”), and Colombian pop idol Juanes (“Dynamic Duet” for his recent duo with Nelly Furtado). Pop music sensation Paulina Rubio took home one of the night’s most important awards, “All Over the Dial,” which recognises the hottest recording artist of the moment.

Filmed at it’s usual annual venue in London’s Hyde Park, The Prince’s Trust, for the seventh year running, stages Britain’s largest one-day live multi-artist concert to a full capacity audience of 100,000, informed an official release.

The artists participating in the show include Will Young, Jamelia, Avril Lavigne, Sugababes, Nelly Furtado and Lionel Richie.

This special concert will benefit The Prince’s Trust, set up by HRH The Prince of Wales to offer opportunities to young people when no one else will. Through a variety of programmes across the UK, The Trust works with 14 to 30 year olds who are unemployed or face other barriers in life, providing support and basic financial assistance to help them learn new skills, get into work and start businesses, added the release.

There’s also a rumour going around that Nelly will play a hour long radio show (that will be broadcasted live, and the radio channel always gives away tickets) next month. The show is called Live-Kantine. From what I know the show would be in the Munich area then, it’s a German radio channel called Antenne Bayern. But so far there’s no confirmation. They state it as planned…G

CALGARY – Nelly Furtado drew nominations in three categories, including Entertainer of the Year, in the list of nominees for the 2004 Western Canadian Music Awards announced Tuesday in Calgary.

In addition to top entertainer, Furtado’s Folklore is nominated for both Outstanding Pop Recording and Outstanding Album (Major Label).

The other candidates for Entertainer of the Year are Michael Bublé, Doc Walker, Sarah McLachlan and Nickelback.

The awards ceremony is part of a three-day music conference and festival that will also include an awards show honouring behind-the-scenes industry workers and workshops for youth interested in pursuing musical careers.

This year marks the second edition of the annual awards ceremony, which recognises outstanding achievement by musicians from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon.

The event was established in late 2002 when the Prairie Music Alliance joined with the Music Industry Associations of B.C. and the Yukon to form the Western Canada Music Alliance.

The Western Canadian Music Awards will be distributed at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on 3rd Oct.

The biggest names in Latin show business, fashion, and sports will be honoured on the first annual “Premios Juventud” (Youth Awards). The electrifying 2-hour entertainment special will be broadcast from Miami, the party capital of the world. It will air live on the Univision Network (NYSE:UVN) on Thursday, 23rd September from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT (8-10 p.m. Central/Mountain).

Recognising popularity and overall appreciation in five distinct areas – Film, Music, Sports, Fashion and Pop Culture – the “Premios Juventud” nominees were selected based on a nationwide poll conducted among a representative sample of Spanish-language television’s younger viewing audience. From 2nd-22nd August, Hispanic America will then cast their votes online and determine the final outcome.

Far from your typical award show, “Premios Juventud” will give awards in 22 unconventional categories in tune with today’s Hispanic youth. It’s one young party no one will want to miss. Marc Anthony and Thalia lead with 13 nominations each; Anthony competes in categories such as “CD to Die For” and “He’s Got Style” and Thalia in “She’s Totally Red Carpet” and “My Idol Is,” among others. Jennifer Lopez follows with 12 nods in categories such as “Show Stealing Actress” and “Dream Chick.” Other multiple nominees include Luis Miguel with 11 nominations and Paulina Rubio and Ricky Martin with 9 each.

I was at the Nelly Furtado Concert in Vancouver this Thursday for the Come As You Are Tour. It’s been called one of the best Nelly shows of all time…but all of the shows I have seen have been awesome, of course this one was the best. The thing with this concert that was different from all the other ones I have seen was that Nelly seemed really comfortable performing in front of the sold-out crowd… she was lovin’ it and so was the crowd.

From Fresh Off The Boat’s hip hop jam, to the Portuguese stylings of a traditional songs of her heritage, Nelly was workin’ it. On Explode, right when she said “We’re counting the stars” all of the background lit up with thousands of lights that looked like stars! It was the coolest! Oh a hip-hop remix of Breath/Get UR Freak On, Prevail from Swollen Members came out and did a freestyle rap that was very awesome. It was hype.

Se did every great song she has. Powerless, Try, I’m Like A Bird, Shit On The Radio, Well Well, Fresh Off The Boat ( the first song of the night! ) as well as Picture Perfect ( Nelly’s favourite new song! ) On Forca, the whole crowd was just so hyped and were singing and chanting and really totally into the spirit of the football theme! She danced throughout the night and was clearly enjoying herself and her fans the whole night.

It was so amazing to see grandmas and children and many generations of family all at one show. You don’t see that very often at other concerts. She has fans of every culture every creed every walk of life. It’s really COOL.

I was in the first row on the second level looking down upon Nelly and her band. It was the perfect spot… though I would have liked to have shook Nelly’s hand gotten a hug and or kiss and a personalised autograph. I did however buy her autograph, which is real and awesome! and I got the brand new COME AS YOU ARE 2004 Tour T shirt in Black! It’s really really nice. She was also selling lots of lovely shirts for females – like a nice bright orange hoodie and mustard embroidered long sleeved shirt. Oh and I can’t forget the silver body glitter with ” NELLY FURTADO” on the side of the jar… that was cool.. I didn’t get the glitter though. Just the shirt and autograph.

Oh ya and I made a sign for Nelly that said “:I love you nelly” and she appeared to love it! Prevail looked up to me and my friend and gave us the “rap stance” Our arms were folded and he played that up on stage by giving us a full out rap pose. I dunno if anyone got that picture but I would love it.

I took my friend for her B-day. She just loved the show. Like me, she has been to every Nelly show and also thought this one was the best one to date. It was the stage presence and vocal ability that was clearly stronger then ever before.

I think Nelly has grown musically and spiritually and culturally and as a person over the past 5 years and will just continue to get better in all areas in her life… including being a new mum. Congrats to Nelly!

Furtado’s 2000 debut, Whoa Nelly!, introduced the world to a woman who grew up in Victoria, identified with hip-hop culture and referred to her Portuguese roots.

By last fall’s Folklore, the second album, she was living in Toronto, had become a mother and was examining those Portuguese roots up close in songs such as “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Saturdays.”

This made her an obvious choice to record the Portuguese theme song for this year’s football extravaganza, Euro 2004. The song, “Forca” (which means “go for it”), identified her even more closely with Portuguese culture. To her credit, “Forca” isn’t the expected rah-rah rallying cry of sports songs. The fans, the athletes are so emotional.

“Yeah!” exclaims Furtado. “That’s what I tried to do. I focused on the emotion of it. I’m glad I did it.”

Getting beneath the surface might be one of Furtado’s strengths. “Turn Out the Lights” or “I’m Like a Bird” are pop songs with depth, which is why they’ve stuck around. The more recent songs — “One Trick Pony,” “Powerless” — are even more subtle and so not as obvious but they do reveal a lot about the artist.

“It’s a more listenable album,” says Furtado. “It has a more organic feel. And I think my voice is richer. The hip hop is still there, though.”

The hip-hop scene of Victoria, which also produced Swollen Members and Kinnie Starr, was very important to Furtado when she first toured.

Yet the concert she performed at the Vogue a few years ago was more aggressive than expected, almost conventional in it’s rock setting.

“Those were my first shows,” Furtado explains. “This tour is different. It’s more sophisticated. I really love it. It’s more durable.”

Another significant difference is that Furtado knows who her audience is now. It isn’t a narrow range of girls no older than their mid-20s, but spans four-year-olds to seniors of both sexes. It is a cross-section that reveals the slower but longer- lasting impact of the new CD.

Furtado also has a stronger sense of her own identity. Motherhood — daughter Nevis is almost a year old — has reinforced that and examining the dynamics of her heritage has underlined her personality.

She isn’t a faceless pop star but someone who came from somewhere, who has a genuine background.

“My Portuguese roots are very much a part of me,” she says. “I can’t separate my roots from who I am. I’m really proud of my roots. But I’m grateful that I was born here. On the second album, I’m trying to celebrate a bit.”

Folklore isn’t Whoa Nelly! Part Two but expands on her identity. This gives her more room to move for her third album.

“I feel like I have really knocked down the door.” Furtado says. “I feel like I can do what I want. Now that I’ve created Folklore I can go anywhere. It’s really freeing.”
