Chris Martin’s collaboration with Nelly Furtado has been mysteriously axed from her forthcoming album. The duet, ‘All Good Things’, was reportedly removed from the LP’s track-listing on the orders of the Coldplay frontman’s record company EMI.

A source told Britain’s Daily Star newspaper: “Three days ago the order came through to remove it from her album. I don’t know if Chris knows yet, but when he finds out he’ll be furious. It seems EMI have a problem rather than either of the artists.”

This is not the first time a duet involving the singer has been stopped by his record company. The Coldplay frontman, who is married to Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow, recorded the original vocal to The Streets’ UK hit ‘Dry Your Eyes’. The group’s frontman, Mike Skinner, revealed: “I asked him to do it and he did, but I don’t think his record company liked it.” Rumours are now circulating that the track Chris recorded with rapper Kanye West may also never be released.

The best update of “Shoop” we never even knew we wanted in the first place. Still a little weird that Timbo is calling himself “Thomas Crown” though. (The Pierce Brosnan remake is seven years old, duder!) But there is a welcome Steve Nash shout out.

Our secret favourite of the record. A bittersweet, Britpoppy ballad in 3/4 time that wouldn’t be out of place ending 120 Minutes in the mid 90s.

Subtract Timbo, add Juanes, and get a fairly unremarkable track (or two, actually.) Nelly spits a Def Poetry Jam interlude though.

OK we need to step our pop reference game up a little for this one. Going to go with “Like A Prayer”-era Madonna, but there’s probably a random Cindi Lauper joint that would have been more appropriate.

Don’t hold Chris Martin against it – he gets his Coldplay on and is still decent on this track, which is in the vein of No Doubt’s quieter moments. And if nothing else, it helps prove that the powers that be shouldn’t have hedged their bets with outside pop production on the other slow jams.

Track And Field also worked once again with Furtado on her third album, “Loose,” due in the spring. “We did a couple of songs, but I think one of them that I’m pretty sure is going to be on the record is called ‘Let My Hair Down,’” says Eaton. “We did it in Toronto at Orange Studios. It’s sort of like a female ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot.’ It’s really sexy. It’s like an urban club track and she does this freestyle rapping/singing over it. It’s very very fresh.”

On a coffee table in a downtown Toronto hotel suite, Celine Dion and David Foster stare out from the cover of a glossy magazine. The pair, smug and self-satisfied, are the epitome of safe, sanitised pop. As Nelly Furtado breezes into the room to discuss Loose, her daring new album produced largely by hip hop’s Timbaland (aka Tim Mosley), the contrast begs comment: she and Mosley are worlds away from the Las Vegas glitz of Dion and Foster. “No kidding, eh,” laughs Furtado, settling into a sofa for an extended interview. “Tim’s always done break-through music, pushing sonic boundaries. And I like to always surprise people and turn their heads 360 degrees, like an exorcist spinning around.” Presumably, without the projectile vomiting. “My music’s always changning,” she continues. ” I don’t know if I have a short attention span, or if it’s just that I like too many styles of music to focus only on one. I just go where the inspiration takes me.”

This time, inspiration took Furtado to Miami, where she and beats mastermind Timbaland (Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg) recorded most of the tracks. Unline her previous albums, which only hinted at urban sounds, Loose is a full-on mix of contemporary Latin, hip hop and R&B styles. “My last two records were a little cerebral,” admits Furtado, “where this one is much more of the body. It’s all feel-oriented, vibe-oriented.” Hedonistic numbers like “Maneater”, the tribal-thumping first single, and “Promiscious Girl”, a steamy rap duet with Mosley, certainly take the Canadian songstress into edgier – and sexier – territory. Rolling Stone even went so far as to call her rhymes on “Promisuous Girl” a celebration of her “inner slut”, which Furtado, a single mother of a toddler, denies. “I just like double entendres,” she insists. ” The album title actually refers to how we approached the record, which was to make it in a very unhinged, unpolished and unedited way.

Loosness is one of the album’s many charms, from the in-studio banter between Furtado and Mosley to the raw, improvised quality of tracks like “Maneater” and “All Good Things” a duet with Coldplay’s Chris Martin. If anything, Loose is a celebration of Furtad’s inner child, as reflected in the giggling laughter that closes “Fraid” and the youthful spirit that pervades such songs as “Do it”, “Glow” and “Say it Right”. Like Gwen Stefani’s Love.Angel.Music.Baby, Furtado’s Loose is an unabashed dance record bound to thrill club-centric audiences – maybe at the expense of core listeners. The multicultural pop queen, whose previous recordings won a Grammy and a slew of Juno Awards, seems resigned to alienating some fans. “I pissed off people when I made a folk album last time,” she says, “and now I’m going to piss off the acoustic types with this album.”

Born in Victoria to Portuguese parents, Furtado has defied conventional wisdom from the start by embracing eclecticism and her own ethnicity. Her debut Whoa, Nelly! released in 2000, included both her breezy pop hit “I’m like a Bird” and later, in some regions, the Portuguese ballad “Onde Estas”. It has sold more than six million copies to date around the world. Her follow up, 2003′s Folklore, featured sounds as diverse as mainstream pop melodies, Brazilian rhythms, hip hop grooves, church music, acoustic folk and funk. Guests ranged from Bela Fleck and Caetano Veloso to the Kronos Quartet, and songs included the Euro 2004 football anthem “Forca”, the immigrant-themed “Fresh Off The Boat” and the breakbeat-laden “Powerless (Say What You Want)”. The latter was a forceful condemnation of the media’s attempt to lighten her olive complexion in photographs: “Paint my face in your magazines,” she sang. “Make it look whiter than it seems.”

While Loose favours lighter messages and mostly carefree party tunes, there’s a heavier emphasis on worldy sounds. In particular, Furtado dove deep into the Latin musical diaspora of the Miami scene. She sings several tracks in Spanish, including the Timbaland-produced “No Hay Igual”, a groove-alicious tune rooted in the Caribbean hip hop fusion style known as reggaeton and the romantic ballad “Te Busque”, produced by Lester Mendez (Shakira). “Being in Miami, as a young Latin woman, made me feel very at home,” says Furtado. “I’ve always loved the Latin American culture in the United States and I realised how much I enjoy singing in Spanish, not just Portuguese. It comes really naturally to me.”

Furtado’s first brush with the Latin music market dates back to 2002, when she sang a duet with Colombian pop star Juanes on his single “Fotografia”. It became a number one hit on the Latin charts and the pair performed the song on the Latin Grammy Awards show. Juanes later returned the favour, joining Furtado on her Spanish version of “Powerless.”

Meanwhile, Furtado’s love affair with R&B and hip hop began when she was growing up in Victoria, listening to everything from Mary J. Blige and Boyz II Men to LL Cool J and Ice T. After moving to Toronto at 17 (she lived with relatives), she formed a trip-hop duo called Nelstar. As legend now has it, her career break came when she appeared in a downtown club as the only white female at the Honey Jam, a showcase of black women performerse. There she met The Philosopher Kings’ Gerald Eaton and his manager Chris Smith. Eaton and his partner, Brian West, became her production team known as Track & Field, while Smith took on management duties. Furtado first crossed paths with Timbaland with he sampled “Baby Girl” from Whoa, Nelly! and then remixed the album’s “Turn Off The Light.” Timbaland also brought Furtado in to duet on his remix of Missy Elliott’s “Get UR Freak On.”

Sitting in the hotel suite, the diminutive Furtado talks in fast, staccato bursts, punctuated frequently by eruptions of girlish laughter, as she explains her embrace of hip hop. “I’ve been doing all these collaborations with these great acts like Missy Elliott, Jurassic 5 and The Roots,” Furtado recalls, “and I suddenly though, if hip hop comes so naturally to me, why not do it on my own albums. Am I too good for hip hop? Isn’t that kind of egotisticall and pretentious? Why can’t I let go of all that?” She continues: ” I also realised that I’d done The Tonight Show with Jay Leno like five or six times, and the time I was least nervous was when I was performing with Missy Elliott. It just rolled off. I had to get on and do it myself.”

Working with Timbaland on Loose, she says, gave her the freedom to delve deeply into her love of hip hop. “Tim’s a definite genius,” says Furtado. “He comes to the studio with this huge duffle bag, carrying all these CDs of mostly crazy world music – African music and things I’ve never heard. He’s a real inspired guy.” Mosley’s jam-oriented approach to music also let to a near voodoo experience on “Maneater”. Recalls Furtado: “Tim was programming a beat and I was singing with a keyboardist and a guitar player. The energy in the room took on this almost pagan-like quality. Suddenly, the speaker started to smoke and then flames shot out. The volume was so loud that the rubber was burning on the speaker. It was very anamalistic.”…..

Daytime, however, was highly domestic. Furtado would spend mornings and afternoons at the beach with her daughter, Nevis, soaking up the Florida sunshine. It proved the perfect balance between work and play. “There’s a spiritual vibe in Miami,” says Furtado. “The sunishe and water keeps everybody really light and friendly. Everyone’s into their bodiestoo. Everyone was nice tanned skin. People walk around in bikinis, even on the street. You feel sexy in Miami – maybe that’s why I made such a sexy album.”

The Coldplay connection came about when Chris Martin and Furtado ran into each other at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards in Miami. When Furtado found out that Martin and Timbaland were big fans of each other’s work, she decided to bring then together soon after in the studio. On “All Good Things”, Martin can be heard at the outset telling Mosley to “give us a sick beat.” The jam that follows, with Furtado and Martin singing the refrain “flames to dust; lovers to friends; why do all good things come to an end,” proves to be one of the album’s most spirited moments. “Why have we stopped?” asks Martin when the jam suddenly comes to a halt, leading to much laughter and Martin’s quick-witten rejoinder: “Why do all good jams come to an end?”

Such a spontaneous moment would never be found on Davis Foster – produced Celine Dion album. It’s too loose, anarchic and uncontrolled for the Schmaltz King and Ersatz Queen of MOR pop. But for Furtado and Timbaland, the eclectic songbird and the studio innovator, spontaneity comes as naturally as breathing. “That’s what it’s about,” says Furtado, of her and Mosley’s unbridled approach to recording. “It’s about people coming by for late-night jam sessions and having fun. It’s not rocket science – we’re making music here.”

“This new album is like a throw back album for me,” she tells me.After experimenting with Scott Storch and Nellee Hooper in the studio, her label suggested to team up with hip hop prodigy Timbaland for “Loose.” The two had worked previously on the remix of Furtado’s “Turn Off The Light,” which became a huge smash on the hip hop charts a few years back.

After not having seen each other for four years, Furtado travelled to Miami to start working with Timbaland. Furtado describes the instant musical chemistry between them as “voodoo energy.” Check out the first successful teaming between Furtado and Timbaland that features plenty of voodoo-ish energy (and mudslinging!).

Nelly Furtado’s brand-new album “Loose” will hit stores worldwide on 20th June 2006. The record was initially slated for release in May but due to Nelly’s tour dates in Europe, Geffen decided to delay the release until after her concert commitments.

At first listen, “Loose” is an explosion of pure, raw energy. Continuing her “Força,” Nelly and Timbaland gather big beats and cheeky raps with lots of dance floor-ready production tricks.

Good examples of Nelly’s new vibe are the first singles “Promiscuous” (for the USA – a saucy, ghetto fabulous duet with Timbaland) and the irresistible club track “Maneater” (for the rest of the world).

The entire album sounds like a rough cut with studio chatting and Nelly’s giggling between tracks and even into the songs that creates a very informal (read: loose) atmosphere on the album.

“Loose” will surely be one of the most noteworthy pop releases of 2006 that will please her fans and pleasantly surprise the masses.

The slow song sounds like a love song, very kind of tropical island feel, she sang the words “i look(ed) into your eyes…” and then they cut to another scene. It sounds like an awesome song, like the album’s gonna be a mix of the Maneater stuff and good ol’ acoustic Nelly, but hey she’s always full of surprises…

When talking about her album “The biggest point I want to make about the album is that it’s not for you to over think, just put it in your cd player, relax, and get lost in it”.

At the end they showed the promo pics made by max87 (her in the forest) on the backdrop once again.

They played the same clip from her performing at night in barbados with the hot red pants, and there were also scenes in the day time of her performing that acoustic song, like mmm said in the poofy dress and green summer topic, a big chunky beaded necklace, she looked very natural, very pretty, nothing like those promo pics

They said she will hit the European festival circuit this summer, with a North American Tour planned for the Autumn and that the album comes out 23rd May 20th June 2006, as stated already.

She also said the best thing she ever did was have a baby. She said it was the best thing for herself, her body, and her career.

She said she LOVES her new body, it’s more curvy, she’s healthy, and she said her butt is bigger, which is good cause she’s making hip hop music haha. Then they went to a shot of her on stage singing maneater, having fun and shaking her bootay.

This interview has made me VERY excited for the album personally, even though I was somewhat sceptical before. Personally, and obviously from me watching the show is not gonna make me right by any means, but I think alot of people will be pleasantly surprised, dont’ get your hopes too too down, from the sounds of that acoustic song, it sounded VERY Nelly, yet in a different place from Folklore (way more happy) and nothing like Maneater or PG.

I hope this lightens some people’s opinions, and may I say this for everyone’s sake, wait for the album to make a complete judgement over ‘selling out’ or what not. It was kind of iffy to some with the sounds of Maneater and PG, but the new sounds on the show were very refreshing to hear, and very relieving haha. I’m happy! Hopefully someone taped it! Just a different take on the lyric: “Now our love’s floating out the window” or “Now all that’s floating out the window”, but I am really not sure, and the lyric posted earlier could very well be the one.

The acoustic guitar appeared to be the only instrument used to accompany Nelly’s wonderful voice, and the song sounds enchanting…I love it already!

If the second clip is another song, it seems slower than the first and I thought I heard “I/ looked at your face/ and I saw the old” (the slashes indicate caesura).

She had really natural makeup, and her hair looked very natural in its soft waves and loosely braided on when she performed these songs, in fact, her whole look was bohemian. The outfit in which she performed was a blouson tank top in medium-toned turquoise with a white stripe bordering the top and bottom, and pretty lace-up spaghetti straps in white on each side.

The skirt was white and flat at the top, and the bottom had pleats or a ruffle. A dark pink stripe ran horizontally through the bottom of the skirt. She wore a thick white bangle on her left wrist, and a necklace with large stones in pale-pink, pale-green and white.

When interviewed she wore an almost-lime green tank with thick straps and a scoop-neck, and wide jean cut-off shorts that came down to her knees. She had a thick silver chain necklace, and a necklace with light green beads. Her hair was a sunkissed-brown.

On her new disc, Furtado called in some of the best hip-hop and R&B producers (Scott Storch, the Neptunes and Timbaland) to help her make an album that mixes R&B, hip-hop and Eighties dance music and could make for some Gwen Stefani comparisons. “I tapped into a really nice energy, a little more light, a little more sexy,” says Furtado.

On the single “Promiscuous Girl,” Furtado and Tim trade come-ons over keyboard lines that recall Purple Rain-era Prince. And the sweet-sad “Showtime,” which Furtado calls “a proper R&B slow jam,” will have girls everywhere singing into their hairbrushes.

Compared to her peers, Nelly has dared to reinvent herself with a completely new sound that is still distinctively hers. Whereas Pink comes with the same spiel and Paris’ debut CD will be overshadowed by her public persona, Nelly is destined to be this year’s big surprise in my opinion.

Hi everybody! How ya’ doing? I know I have stated other dates here before, so now I have zero credibility with you, but my official album release date is 23rd May!!!!!!! The first single is now PROMISCUOUS. There will be another club track out at the same time called “NO HAY IGUAL”. I am excited. “Loose” is a fast, fun album. Watch for me on tv.. Tim and I will be performing our song any day now, all of the time….my video shoots for both songs take place next week. Little x is at the helm. Well, I had better go do some sit-ups!!! After a year and a half spent writing new songs, travelling the world to collaborate with Pharrell Williams, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and producer Nellee Hooper (No Doubt, Madonna), Nelly Furtado is finally ready to release her third album, Loose, on 23rd May 20th June 2006.

“It was a very indulgent experience,” says the eclectic Canadian pop singer. “It was actually the most idyllic sort of album-making ever. It’s sort of every artist’s dream, where you’re flown around the world, just kind of having a good time and making music.”

In August, when it came time to lay down the tracks, Furtado turned to hip-hop talent Timbaland, who featured her on Missy Elliott’s “Get UR Freak On” remix in 2001. When Interscope President Jimmy Iovine played Furtado some of the producer’s latest tracks, her reaction was “Wow! It sound[ed] like he’s listening to all the same stuff as me — everything from System of a Down to Bloc Party and Death From Above 1979, and a lot of Coldplay, too.” Within no time, says Furtado, “I was in Miami and having the time of my life.”

Working in the evenings, the pair laid down ten of Loose‘s thirteen tracks, forging a new genre from their shared influences. “We call it ‘punk-hop,’” she says of most of the album’s sound. “We were thinking, ‘Let’s do modern Eurythmics — You’re Dave and I’m Annie. Let’s make this modern, poppy, spooky music.’ And we achieved that on some of the tracks.”

The track “Maneaters,” Furtado says, is “a ‘couture pop’ song, where it’s in your face and very fashionable, stylistic and of-the-moment,” while “No Hay Igual” takes its cues from reggaeton. “I didn’t know what reggaeton was until I went to Miami and Pharrell’s like, ‘You’re crazy!’” she confesses. “He played me a reggaeton song, and then I was like, ‘Holy shit, it’s great!’” She was inspired to write “No Hay Igual,” in Spanish, nearly on the spot.

The album closer “All Good Things,” which features Chris Martin, was actually a last-minute addition, after Furtado bumped into her old friend during August’s MTV Movie Awards. “I was telling him what I was up to, and he’s like, ‘I love Timbaland. It was, in part, these spontaneous creative decisions that led Furtado to name the album Loose. “I left in all the sour notes; I left in all the giggling,” she says. “It’s good times.”

This is not a hip hop banger at first, although being an easily danceable beat driven, electro production, but it is extremely innovative and fresh in spite of using pretty basic and simple melodies.

In a market which thrives on innovation, it seems that Nelly Furtado never fails to produce. Her style is creative and Maneater is only a taste for what’s to come off her third album “Loose”. This is all very different from what we are used to hearing from both artist and producer alike.
